Customer Challenge

Modern infrastructure buildings such as water treatment- and district cooling plants, as well as various industrial applications are increasingly feeding various processes with AC variable speed drives.  While the use of AC drives brings several benefits, they are a major source of harmonic distortions. Harmonics distort the sine wave and impact reliability, operational lifetime and costs in a number of ways.

Several technological alternatives have been developed to curb the harmonic distortions at the source. These include: multi-pulse AC drives, Active Front End Drives and Low Harmonic Drives. While multi-pulse AC drives such as 12 or 18-pulse AC drives can bring the harmonic distortions down, they cannot always guarantee the compliance with the standards and recommendations which govern harmonic distortion limits.

Active Front End (AFE) drives and Low Harmonic Drives are proven solutions to ensure guaranteed compliance with harmonic distortion limits specified in IEEE 519, G5/4, IEC61000 3-2,3-4 and others. Active Front End drives are an ideal solution especially when regenerative energy needs to be fed back to the grid. However, higher cost and larger footprint makes them often prohibitive for most of the applications.

Merus Solution – Low Harmonic Drives

Merus proven technology along with 6-pulse variable speed drives can be used to deliver a reliable and efficient Low Harmonic Drive solution. When comparing to Active Front End (AFE) drive solutions, Low harmonic drive solutions provide several benefits:

Merus Low Harmonic Drive solution combines either A2-Series or M-Series active harmonic filters in parallel to the 6-pulse variable speed drives. With this solution, our customers are able to receive an efficient and cost effective solution to their power quality needs.
