The Merus Power UPQ solution is built on an innovative concept combining power protection and power quality compensation into one single device. When no additional harmonic filters or reactive power compensation devices are needed, UPQ saves valuable space and is cost-effective.
Full scalability is achieved through modularity both in the power conversion/active filtering units and in the selection of the energy storage media. This gives the plant owner an opportunity to optimize the investment cost according to power level, protection time, cost and/or environmental conditions.
Unlike conventional solutions, Merus UPQ provides superior connectivity options. It can be easily connected at any voltage level up to 38.5 kV. This allows flexible protection for single loads or for entire production processes.
Unlike online UPS systems, Merus UPQ is connected in parallel with loads. This results in an excellent low-loss solution. Regardless of the parallel connection, the time it takes to enable the power protection mode is short enough to prevent any system shutdown. This has a significant impact on the total cost of ownership of the power protection system.
In normal conditions, UPQ operates in the power quality mode, filtering harmonics, compensating reactive power, stabilizing voltage and balancing unbalanced loads. Providing your equipment with good-quality electricity you can ensure that your facility fulfills its expected lifespan.
UPQ is equipped with the same sophisticated touch-screen HMI as Merus Power active harmonic filters. HMI guarantees easy commissioning and operation of UPQ. Power quality can be monitored with the built-in power quality monitoring feature.
Merus UPQ has two operation modes: power quality mode and power protection mode.
In normal operating conditions, UPQ is in the power quality mode, filtering harmonic distortions, improving power factor, eliminating flicker, stabilizing voltage and balancing unbalanced loads. When all harmonics are compensated, the response time of UPQ is less than 1 millisecond. In contrast to normal online UPS systems, UPQ is normally connected in parallel with loads. In parallel connection the losses of UPQ are extremely low and short circuit current is not limited by UPQ.
In the event of power outage or voltage sag, loads are disconnected from the main supply with Merus thyristor switch, and UPQ’s power protection mode is enabled in less than half a network cycle. UPQ shifts from current source to voltage source and starts to inject active power to the loads, ensuring complete immunity to mission critical processes against short-term outages and voltage sags.
With Merus UPQ your system is always protected and running with optimal performance, no matter what happens in the power distribution system. Compared to normal online UPS systems, the total cost of ownership (TCO) is reduced by UPQ’s low losses in the power quality mode. Investment costs are lower as separate harmonic filters or reactive power compensation systems are not required.
