Smooth operation of a large compressor in a chemical plant with Merus™ Active Harmonic Filters
Bringing total harmonic distortion (THD) below IEEE 519 – 1992 limits
Large compressors in an Asian chemical plant were being fed by high power variable speed drives (VFDs). The operation of the drives was causing high harmonic currents up to 35%. A number of individual harmonics were found high, e.g. 5th, 7th, 11th and 13th, in the case of the 5th and 7th very high, and needed to be mitigated. In the electric distribution system, high harmonic distortions damaged the electronic cards and capacitor banks and led to excessive heating of cabling and transformers.
The Merus™ M-series Active Harmonic Filters were selected to clean the network from high current distortion content. They reduced all individual harmonic distortions below the limits specified in IEEE 519 – 1992 restoring reliable plant operation.
