No more tripping of diesel generating sets with Merus™ Active Harmonic Filters in a district cooling plant

Current and voltage distortion to meet IEEE 519 – 1992 limits

A large commercial complex in the Middle East was fed with 11 diesel generating sets of 1.6MW each. The main loads at the district cooling plant were centrifugal and the absorption chillers were being fed by AC drives. The short-circuit level was low at 13.5kV busbar. Upon commissioning of the project, a number of trippings of the diesel generating sets were observed. A detailed analysis highlighted high harmonic currents. Merus™ Active Harmonic Filters were installed on two separate busbars. Tripping was totally eliminated, and no further unexpected instrument failures were reported.
