Merus Power extends plant lifetime at a waste water treatment plant

Mitigating harmonic distortions produced by 6-pulse variable speed drives

Reliable operation of a waste water treatment plant in the Asia Pacific region was the prime objective of design consultants. To ensure that harmonic distortions remain below the limits specified in IEEE 519 – 1992, design options for 6-pulse variable speed drives with active harmonic filters and active front end (AFE) drives were evaluated.

Merus Power was asked to provide a detailed technical comparison. 6-pulse standard variable speed drives with active harmonic filters proved to be the by far superior design. Not only were they commercially more viable, but they also had a number of other technical advantages over an active front end (AFE) solution.
