Improving power factor and reducing harmonic distortions at a cable factory with a hybrid compensation solution
AC and DC drives were among the non-linear loads at a cable factory in Africa. These loads were causing both; high harmonic voltage distortions and power factor as low as 0.75. With excessive downtimes, production losses and maintenance costs were high.
Motivated to decrease their rising operational costs, they were seeking to improve their existing compensation system, limited by slow response time and incapability to cancel harmonic distortions. Merus and their South African partner RWW suggested a hybrid solution consisting of active harmonic filters and conventional detuned capacitor banks. Real time response of this cost-effective solution improved power factor close to unity and brought voltage distortions below 5%, which are acceptable limits under the IEEE 519.
